What to Wear
Please note that this is a highly personal list. Mark wears a lot of hats so brings a ton of those. I tend to wear dresses instead of pants as they are lighter so I bring more of those so each person can tailor to their own needs. That being said, here is a general list that should help you. This is geared for 5-6 months of travel without going home to “reset”
- Tops – 8-10 including a mix of short-sleeved, long-sleeved, and tank tops. Choose tops that can be layered to adjust to different temperatures. I tend to do one long sleeve shirt that can be layered, one long sleeve heavier tshirt and the rest tank tops, sleeve less and short sleeve shirts / t shirt.
- Bottoms – 5 pairs of bottoms whether that is pants, shorts or skirts. I tend to do 2 wrap skirt or pull on skirts, and a pair of draw string cargo pants, one pair of middle weight pants and a pair of shorts that can double as workout shorts. I don’t bring jeans though I love them because they are too heavy and take too long to hang dry but if you live in jeans then of course by all means. I also tend to avoid clothes with buttons or zippers if I can.
- Dresses: This is where I usually bring more than others. I bring 4 light dresses – one long one, 2 slip dresses that can be layered over one another.
- Jackets: 1-2 depending on where you are going – essentially one light one and one heavier one, ideally that can double as a rain coat.
- Shoes: 4-5 pairs of shoes, including a pair of comfortable walking shoes, a pair of nice athletic shoes, a pair of sandals, a pair of flip flops, and a pair of dress shoes (optional).
- Underwear and socks: Enough underwear and socks for 1-2 weeks.
- Other items: Two swimsuits (nothing like putting that wet suit back on – 2 is necessary to give the other time to dry), hat, sunglasses, scarf, and any other accessories you need. I tend to bring a couple of lightweight silk scarves that double as sarongs and change up my slip dresses by draping them over my shoulders or around my waist.
- If you are traveling to a cold climate, don’t – but seriously If you do, , you may also want to pack the following – a heavier coat, gloves, warmer scarf.
- The other thing I will sometimes do is bring things that are nearing the end of their usable life – that worn sweater that you love but really has seen better days, those shoes that have been resoled 3 times. You have less guilt shedding them along the way.
